11:15 AM – 12:15 PM: Order Matters - Implementing the Imperatives of a High Reliability Organization (HRO)
John Beall, MHA, RT(R) RDMS - Senior Clinical NCO to the Chief Medical Officer & Chief Nursing Officer, Madigan Army Medical Center – Joint Base Lewis McChord, WA

In 1999 the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released a landmark review, “To Err is Human” where it revealed statistics of an alarming death rate of 98,000 people dying each year as a result of medical errors. This rate exceeded the combined number of deaths from motor vehicle accidents, breast cancer, and AIDs to become the eight largest cause of death in the U.S. annually. Fourteen years later in 2013, Mark Chassin and Jerod Loeb (The Joint Commission) released their “High-Reliability Health Care: Getting There from Here” where they discussed that despite the “widespread efforts to improve the quality of health care” we as an industry were still having patients suffering from preventable harm.

In 2014, former Secretary of Defense (SECDEF) Chuck Hagel ordered the first enterprise review in the history of the Military Health System (MHS) covering the Army, Navy and Air Force. This review of the MHS accessed whether 1) quality of health care in the MHS meets or exceeds defined benchmarks and 2) has the MHS created a culture of safety with effective processes for ensuring safe and reliable care of beneficiaries. The final report shaped the framework for the MHS to combine the concepts of an integrated health care system with the principles of HRO. During this session the presenter will show you what the MHS has done to set it on the path to becoming an HRO and discuss what has been discovered when combing the three distinct services during this journey

You will learn to:
• Understand why it is so important that healthcare should strive to become an HRO
• Understand what are the imperatives of an HRO and how they can be introduced to your organization.
• Understand about the US Army's journey towards becoming and HRO and see how they are helping the to shape the Military Health System's approach to healthcare.

03:00 PM – 04:00 PM: The Culture of Lean Leadership, Creating Opportunities and Lessons We Learned
Alpana Patel Camilli, RT, (CT), CRT, AS – Manager, Diagnostic Radiology, UCSF Health – San Francisco, CA
David Poon, RT, CRT, BS – Radiology Supervisor, UCSF Health – San Francisco, CA

Organization development takes time, patience and the mindset to bring about cultural shifts in thinking within the leadership team and also within each individual team member. Practicing Lean Leadership provides an abundance of benefits to an organization resulting in maximizing the value we deliver to our patients while bolstering shared leadership within our teams. Shared leadership fosters employee engagement and boosts morale.

As managers become more engaged with their teams through the distribution of duties and follow up, reporting staff are encouraged to become engaged and motivated to continuously improve as their achievements are recognized and ideas implemented.

Managers will be required to coach and recognize specific talents within individual team members to learn the drivers of staff engagement. With a concentrated approach, managers can create an environment of positive continuous improvement and the value this mindframe brings to our patients, peers, and the various other departments that work directly with Radiology.

The mindset of Lean leadership decreases costs of an organization by continuously thinking in terms ofreducing waste and improving processes. Organizations will also see the benefit of having long life career employees, as this mindset increases employee retention. When we inspire and encourage our teams to think in this mindset we establish a base for success for our teams and the organization.

In this presentation we will discuss various examples of the Lean Management mindset, experiments implemented and the resulting lessons learned as we attempt to shift the department culture to lean into positive continuous improvement.

You will learn to:
• The methodology and mindset of Lean Leadership.
• Techniques to optimize staff engagement and how to get your team to think in terms of continuous improvement and therefore create the ultimate patient experience.
• Demonstrate how the two guiding tenants of continuous improvement and demonstrating respect can reduce overall waste for the imaging department.

04:15 PM – 05:15 PM: I Feel Like I’ve Been Run Over by a Truck
Katharine McKenna, – Best Selling Author, Motivational Speaker, – Brooklyn, NY

Have you ever had a moment where your entire world is turned upside down? Where you feel like your life has been smashed into a million pieces, and you are unsure of how you will ever put those pieces back together again? For me, that moment was when my body was run over by an 18 wheel truck about 11 years ago. This one event changed my life forever, and the experiences I had with medical professionals during, and after that moment, impacted the way I saw the world.

Patient care is a growing concern for many hospital systems around the world, but many struggle to find the voice of the patient due to limited availability of skilled patient speakers. In my talk, I draw from my own positive and negative experiences in the hospital system, and walk through what a huge impact the communications choices of my providers had on me and my healing.

During my talk, I will walk the audience through how the way that care providers interact with their patients has deep and lasting effects. I explain through personal examples that the relationships they build with their patients can change the way patients see their challenges, how they feel about their caretakers, and how they feel about the hospital itself.

You will learn to:
• Describe how patients adjust to being a sick or injured person – what that adjustment is like and what might help or hinder that adjustment.
• Explain the importance of communication between medical professionals and their patients as they are healing. How what you say and do impacts patient's healing process.
• Discuss resilience in patients, and also in everyone as medical professionals.
